I’ve been thinking about how this time of year (September) has a similar feel to January. For many people (not everyone), summer takes on its own persona. Those with kids or who are teachers, it's adjusting to and even perhaps taking advantage of a different, sometime chaotic schedule. There are family vacations or longer weekends. It’s the same for businesses too. Even if it's "business as usual", the employees are on the summer schedules. A lot of organizations will have four day work weeks or half day Fridays. And then there are organizations who get busier because of summer, so the focus shifts to all operations.

And then summer ends and things recalibrate. As we settle back in, there is a sense of refocusing on goals and finishing the year off strong.

What I talk about in this episode is when the goals no longer make sense or don't have the s in-same energy as they used to.

Here is the message: it’s okay to change your goals.

However, there are some things that you should think about before you do:

  1. Get very clear on why you set the goal in the first place

  2. Get very clear on why you want to change it

  3. Ask yourself if you like your reasons for wanting to change (or end) your goal

  4. Ask what the future version of yourself would tell you

The second ‘why’ is really key. Because - if the why is something that sounds like a limiting belief, or because of perfectionist tendencies or because you aren’t quite seeing the results you thought you would yet - those might not be reasons that you like. Especially if you dig into those reasons a little bit more. Don’t just say you like those reasons as a way to avoid a reality that you might not want to face.

And - if there are limiting beliefs - you really can look at those like a gift.  Not the limiting belief itself – but the fact that you are noticing and bringing them to light.  Because it is then that you can do something about them.  You can decide to not believe them. You can decide to work on changing them.  You can decide to give yourself permission to really see what you are capable of.

What do you think?

  • What goals do you need to examine? Do you need to change any? Do you like your reasons?
