As an Oprah Winfrey fan - one of my favorite segments she included in her talk show, magazine and her books is “What I Know For Sure”. It is this little nugget of wisdom of her best advice for living your best life.
Based on this past week – this is my version of “What I Know For Sure” as it relates to the intersection of self-awareness and leadership. Of course, this truly pertains to all humans whether in a leadership role or not.
At the time of my writing, over the past 7 days, I’ve had some fun and insightful engagements with a variety of leaders from differing organizations. It included:
An abbreviated Intro to Insights session with a group of senior leaders
Two one-hour presentations at a supervisors’ conference, one about Imposter Syndrome and one about becoming
Two days with a senior leadership group that I’ve been engaging with this year. I facilitated on Leading Through Change, Accountability, Resilience and Values - all with an undertone of awareness.
This week I’m presenting to another organization about Overcoming Your Limiting Beliefs.
A common denominator of every presentation and every topic was: self-awareness.
What I Know For Sure is that self awareness matters.
Here are eight take-aways to support my What I Know For Sure thoughts (listen to the episode for more detail!):
Topics about understanding yourself are popular.
People are people are people. We all have differences but most crave to be their best, to have connection, to be valued, to be heard and exercise their ability shift their thinking and results.
The underpinning, the foundation, the pixie dust, the magic of being the leader you want to be, to being effective, to be impactful and to get the results you most want is self-awareness.
The topic is universal – the experience is individual
One session is not enough. It may start with high-level knowledge - which opens up more curiosity and questions.
It’s when you continue to deepen and broaden your knowledge and awareness that it becomes a game-changer for you.
Leaders deserve time focused on them.
Repeat #3.
Remember - you don’t need to go it alone. You shouldn’t go it alone! There are so many resources available. Give yourself that gift!
What do you think?
How does self-awareness play a role in your leadership?
