Every year, I choose a word of the year. It’s is a word that I focus on as a guide in decision-making and transformation. It is rooted in something that I want to bring into my life. I did an episode all about it awhile back - listen here if you would like to learn more: Episode 46: One Word Can Create Results. And each year - I do a workshop through Ali Edwards called One Little Word. Each month, I’m provided with a prompt that helps keep the word alive and progressing. It’s so helpful!
I was thinking that this month’s prompt (September 2023) would make a good challenge for you - the leader.
The challenge is this: Pick one thing that you can do every day for 30 days that is in service of your word of the year. However - you might not have a word - and that’s okay! Instead, choose a goal that you have. we all have something that we are working toward. If you don’t - I know you have some type of desire. Use that as your base!
As I was thinking about this for me – a couple of things came up:
My word this year is amplify. It’s been a good work for me. And – this coming month (September 2023) is very busy. I have a lot of great projects, speaking events and coaching engagements, plus a trip at the end of the month (plus a lot happening on the home front). I’m feeling amplified! There is definitely something around this that would be useful for me through the lens of a challenge.
I have a goal around attracting more discovery calls for 1:1 coaching. This goal would also be a good focus for this challenge.
Just a few things:
Your timeframe doesn’t have to be 30 days. You pick the timeframe - but make it meaningful.
It doesn’t haven’t to be during a certain or whole month. Again - you pick.
I do want you to decide ahead of time what your timeframe is and when it will start and end. If you leave it open – your brain won’t commit. That makes it too easy to get off track. Give yourself something to hold yourself accountable to.
There is no need to make it complicated! It should be something that is realistic and doable for a period of time.
Let me share some examples of goals that many of my clients might be working toward and some ideas on how the challenged could be approached:
Goal: Get promoted at your current organization
Possible daily action: One thing to help prep for a promotion (i.e. set up a coffee, practice one future self belief, step up for a stretch task)
Goal: Pivot career
Possible daily action: Do a job search and/or apply for one job daily
Goal: Increase membership in your program or email list
Possibly daily action: Make a new connection daily
Goal: Improve a skill (i.e. decision making or more knowledge in a program like Excel)
Possible daily action: Read 10 pages from a book on the topic every day
Goal: Connect with your team more effectively
Possible daily action: Intentionally connect with one team member every day – asking curious questions
Goal: Make more money
Possible daily action: Write one money affirmation everyday
Goal: Focus on health
Possible daily action: Preplan one meal per day and stick to it
Here’s what I love about doing a challenge like this:
It can form a habit.
It will reveal thoughts about the goal - Is it a good one? Does it need be altered? Is it misaligned? Are there other possibilities?
It might reveal limiting beliefs. Who do I think I am? I don’t think I can do this. I can never stick with anything. What if this happens?? What if it doesn’t happen?
It will generate momentum and move in the direction of progress.
When you are coming up with your one thing, think about the results you want. When you know the result, decide what actions you will need to take. Ask yourself, what feeling would drive those actions? What thought would you need to think in order to generate that feeling?
Be sure to track your progress. Again – there is no need to complicate this. Making it visual can be helpful! I did create a very simple tracker - feel free to download it here!
Here is what I decided to focus on (September 2023)
In order to support my word of amplify - I want to keep calm and grounded during these next 30 days. What I believe will help me is to journal every morning. I will be able to set an intention and get out any of the thoughts creating stress and anxiety. I’m ready for it!
What do you think?
What will you commit to?
