Message from Walt Disney

WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

original message date: 08/01/22

Happy Monday!

Welcome to the 110th Magic Monday message! I love that I haven’t repeated a quote in 110 weeks. I will likely revisit many in the future – some of the classics are just so good! For those that have been with me the whole time – thank you!

This week – I’m bringing you another quote from Walt Disney himself. It is reflective of something I talk about with my leadership and life coaching clients all the time!

I absolutely believe in the power of positivity. The energy that you put out into the world will impact what you get back. Being optimistic and adopting positive affirmations influences your perspective and the results you create.

AND…

Having an optimistic lens and repeating positive affirmations does not mean life will be all rainbows and daisies. Life is 50/50 no matter what. It will be 50% amazing and 50% tough. 50% smooth sailing and 50% challenging.

Life is complex like that.

How you think about and handle the uncomfortable 50% does matter. However, onlybeing optimistic and positive can actually do more harm than good. It can be a way to gloss over the uncomfortable rather than acknowledge and address it. And that is not helpful.

For example – say you are in the market for a promotional position. You’ve been applying to several openings. You interview for a role you are excited about – but didn’t get the job. Optimism would have you think “it will all work out the way it’s supposed to” or “it wasn’t meant to be”. However, when you don’t get the 2nd, 3rd or 4th job…. this optimism will start to wear out. It will become more difficult to believe these thoughts. As a matter of fact – optimism might turn into pessimism.

Because life is complex like that.

Let me be clear - there is nothing wrong with these optimistic statements and perspectives – I say them to myself and my clients often. It’s when they are used as a way to ignore the uncomfortable that it becomes problematic.

To maximize looking on the optimistic side of life – don’t gloss over the complexity. Embrace it, acknowledge it, process it.

Using this example – you want to FEEL the disappointment about not getting the jobs in addition to believing that it wasn’t meant to be. It’s okay to get mad about things not going your way AND believe that it will all work out in the end.

The realistic way to compliment your optimism is to get really clear on your thoughts and feelings. Decide what new (realistic and believable) thoughts to think that will serve you better.

Use the optimistic lens as a guiding principle – not a band aid.

You can live the realistically complex life of your dreams hugged by all the magic of optimism by doing the continuous and transformative self-awareness work!

Let’s do this.

How does the balance of being optimistic and realistic show up in your life?

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
