Message from Pocahontas

WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

Happy Monday!

One of my favorite topics in coaching and leadership development is change.  The real magic of change lies in the ability to  understand and lead through the human side of it.

We are generally wired to resist change.  The fear of the unknown and the comfort of what is sends the brain into protector mode.  But when we embrace the fact that change is a constant – we can engage in change from a more logical and compassionate place.

I love how this quote from the song “Just Around the River Bend” from Disney’s Pocahontas paints the picture of how the constant of change is actually a beautiful thing:

Every day we have new experiences or take in new information that shapes us.  This is true even when life feels like the “same ‘ol same ‘ol”.  People we encounter, books or articles we read or something we see on TV or social media leaves an imprint on us in some way.  Sometimes the imprint is noticeable (conscious) – yet often times it embeds into our unconscious.

And then there are changes that are ‘bigger’ and more obvious – like taking on a new role, having a child, losing a job or going through a global pandemic.  Regardless if the change is perceived as good or bad (which are, I must point out, very subjective terms) – we always have a choice on how we process and adopt it.

There is much to share around the psychology of change and how to lead others through it (an area that every leader should spend time on…I would love to help with that!).

But the first step is to embrace that there is always change - the water’s always changing, always flowing.

Your thoughts around this very concept is key to how you experience the river.

Take a few minutes at the end of each day to think about what experiences, information and observations from the day have shaped or changed you in some way. Write down the thoughts you have. Ask yourself how can you shift your perspective to leverage what you’ve learned.

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
