Message from Joe Gardner
WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT
Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).
original message date: 09/19/22
Happy Monday!
So - I’ve come to really dislike a certain phrase as of late. It’s a very common combination of words that people use every day (myself included). And it’s basically the first thing out of the mouths of my kids anytime a question is asked. Have you guessed what I’m referring to?
It’s these words: I DON'T KNOW.
However, even though this quote from Joe Gardner (from Disney/Pixar’s “Soul”) starts with those very three words – it packs a great message. Let me explain.
Now listen – sometimes “I don’t know” is just a reactionary response. You might say it and then quickly reverse it. “I don’t know what to have for dinner. I think I’ll go grab a sub.” You really DID know what to have for dinner – you just felt compelled to pretend you didn’t for a quick second.
But here are two reasons why I don’t like “I don’t know.”
It keeps you stuck. I don’t know allows your brain to be in confusion. And confusion doesn’t let you move forward. It just keeps you in the swirl.
It minimizes your own inner wisdom. We all have it – yet when we succumb to “I don’t know” – we basically are saying we don’t trust ourselves.
When my clients say “I don’t know” – it typically gets in the way of their goals.
“I don’t know what to do.”
“I don’t know how to make that happen.”
“I don’t know if I should choose this or that.”
Swirl. Confusion. Stuck.
Two things I’ll ask that helps:
✨ What DO you know? This allows the brain to bring light to all of sorts of things that will help in decision-making.
✨ If there wasn’t a “right” or “wrong” answer – then what would you do? That small release of expectation and pressure opens up the lens to the inner wisdom.
I know that sometimes we LEGIT do not know how to do something, what something means or what to do next. And that is okay. Just don’t stop with the “I don’t know.” Try adding on, “but I’m willing to figure it out.” See how that opens up possibilities and a sense of action?
Just like with the quote. Joe Gardner starts with an “I don’t know”. But he quickly declares what he does know - which cultivates action. And will no doubt lead him to what he will do with his life.
I know I usually focus more on the meaning of the quote in these messages – so I must point out that the sentiment of this one is GOOD. At the core – it’s all about opening up, moving forward and staying in belief.
You know?
How can you intentionally stay out of the swirl and confusion of “I don’t know” and embrace every moment?
Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
