WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

original message date: 07/15/24

Happy Monday!

If you and I were to meet at a favorite coffee shop (or brewery?  I’m up for both!) and I asked you for some advice on the number of things I could use advice on… I bet you would fill me with incredible wisdom and I’d walk away feeling ready to conquer the world.

My question to you is this:  do you share that impactful advice with yourself?  And do you apply it to your own leadership and life?

Or – does this quote by Alice from the 1951 Disney animated classic, Alice in Wonderland, sound more like you:

Separate from my coaching abilities - I’m told that I’m pretty good at advice-giving too.  Yet, I used to be the worst at following it myself when it actually could have helped me.

When we are in our brain and getting caught up in our own thoughts, feelings and ‘invisible’ blind spots – it’s more challenging to really hear and apply what we think is made for everyone else.  The reason why might be different for each of us…but my guess is that most of us can relate.

But I started to get weary of feeling a bit like an imposter after coaching or advise-giving.  I wasn’t always modeling that advice in real-life ways.  And I still don’t listen to myself 100% of the time – but I’m way better.

Here are a few things that have helped:

✨  Coaching - working with a coach…self-coaching…coaching in all the ways.

✨  Putting myself ‘on the list’ – I can live for helping others AND include myself too.  It’s not one or the other.

✨  A willingness to get uncomfortable in embracing that inner villain.

✨  Coaching (oh, did I already mention that?)

✨  Taking action on the advice – even when it feels hard.  Action creates evidence.

It’s funny how I now cringe whenever I hear the phrase “Do as I say, not as I do”.  I find it to be diminishing to the advice itself (and maybe even the person who says it!?).  If you’re shelling out advice that might just fit your own life / situation –why not just “do as you say”?!  That’s a win for everyone.

So, go take yourself out for that coffee (or bevie of choice).  Listen and learn.  You just might realize that you know what you’re talking about.

The next time you are giving advice, teaching or coaching someone else – ask if what you’ve shared can be applied to yourself. Notice what comes up for you. And take action.

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
