Are you someone who focuses on your own self-development? Do you put it on the top of the priority list? Or is that something that gets pushed to the bottom of your to-do list?
If you are lucky – you might work for an organization that really supports and encourages development. They provide a budget, and a variety of experiences – like workshops, conferences or coaching. Or you might work for an organization that doesn’t necessarily have programs available. Or maybe you are a solopreneur who only has yourself to rely on.
But really – whether you have external support or not – it’s ultimately up to you to ensure you 1) make your own self-development a priority 2) engage in development that is impactful, meaningful and aligned with your goals and 3) apply what you learn.
If you’re not focusing on self-development – why? Development truly is nothing but helpful (or it can be if you approach it in a way that makes most sense for you). And self-development can mean several different things. Most might think of development as simply learning new skills. But it can also be checking in on your chosen line of work or career path, deciding if it’s what still makes your heart sing. It can be looking at non-work areas of your life and better integrating the whole person approach. It can be becoming more self aware and increasing emotional intelligence.
It makes me sad when people choose to delay their personal or leadership development!
I’m using the word “choose” intentionally”. It really is a choice. And I know there all kinds of reasons for it – but it is the focus on our own development that fosters growth and helps us get clear on what we most want (which will continue to evolve and change) and creates the change that might be necessary to reach our goals. Time doesn’t stop – and before we know it – another year passes and we might not made much progress on ourselves.
I do know plenty of people who DO focus on their own personal and leadership development - and it’s really fun to watch that too! In this post, I’m really talking to those who have the intentions but don’t follow through – therefore choose to delay.
Okay – let’s talk about what self-development even means. It is: the process in which a person grows or changes and becomes more advanced through their own efforts.
In the specific world of leadership development – it is activities that improve the skills, abilities and confidence of leaders.
Reasons You Might Delay Self-Development
Here are some of the common reasons for delaying self-development – these might be the barriers that get in your way:
Time: Busy schedules and demanding workloads can make it challenging for you to find time for personal or leadership development activities.
Too many things on your plate already / prioritization: You may prioritize other responsibilities, such as work tasks, family obligations, or personal commitments, over your own development. This can result in neglecting opportunities for growth and learning.
Don’t have the money: Some development opportunities may require financial investment, such as attending workshops, courses, or hiring a coach. Financial constraints can be a barrier for you if you perceive the investment as burdensome.
Lack of support: A lack of encouragement or support from peers, supervisors, or the organizational culture can create a delay in personal and leadership development.
I would call all of these “surface level objections”. There may certainly be truth to them – but there also just might be a deeper reason – maybe even subconsciously. Those reasons might be:
Lack of awareness: Some people may not be fully aware of the importance of personal or leadership development. They may not recognize the potential benefits it could bring to their personal and professional lives.
Comfort zone: People often resist stepping out of their comfort zones. Personal and leadership development often involves taking on new challenges and pushing beyond the familiar, which can be uncomfortable.
Fear of failure: The fear of failure or not living up to your own or others’ expectations can hinder personal and leadership development. Some people may avoid taking risks or trying new things due to a fear of not succeeding.
Lack of motivation: A lack of intrinsic motivation or a clear sense of purpose can contribute to delays in self-development. When you don't see the immediate relevance or impact, you might struggle to stay motivated.
Overemphasis on immediate results: Some people expect immediate results (instant gratification) and may become discouraged if they don't see quick progress. Development is a gradual process that requires persistence and patience.
Perception of being "too late": Some people may feel that they are too old or too far along in their careers to think about self=development.
Resistance to change: Resistance to change is a common human trait. Yet, development often involves embracing change and adapting to new ways of thinking and behaving, which can be a barrier for some.
Thinking you can do it all yourself – you don’t need any help: Some might think they have all of the knowledge and tools already - but we don’t know what we don’t know…
What’s Next?
I encourage to look at your current results Are you satisfied with how you are spending your time? With the work you are doing? With your level of confidence? With the role you have? With the influence you have? With the level and impact of your voice? With how your are connecting with your team? With the money you’re making? With the performance of your department or your business? With the skillset you have?
If the answer is no – even if you feel even a little uncertain, dissatisfied or stuck – spending time on your own development is part of the answer.
Answer this question for yourself:
Are the reasons for the delay worth the results you currently have?
Ways to Develop Yourself
First – be really clear on the end result. What is it you want? What is the future version of yourself? With that clarity - you will have a better idea of what to look for.
There are so many activities that support self-development. Some common ones are:
Courses and workshops (in person or online / live or pre-recorded)
Books + articles
Podcasts
Conferences
Stretch assignments (in work, in community, volunteering)
Mentor relationships
Networking
Coaching: group programs or 1:1
And always stay curious. When you are open to possibility - your brain we start to see the opportunities.
