At the end of my podcasts and in my social media, I’m always suggesting that you book a free Discovery Call.  I realize that some of you might not actually know what a Discovery Call is!  I thought it would be helpful to talk about that in this episode / post.  This will give you a little insight into what a discovery call is so you feel more comfortable booking one!

You may have heard other terminology to describe a call like this - consult call, mini session or strategy call are just a few examples. What it is NOT is a sales call.

I like the term “discovery call” because discovery, by definition, is about uncovering and unearthing.  Discovery is really about getting curious.  And curiosity is such a fundamental skill for connection and progress.

The types of people that I mostly work with are leaders and entrepreneurs.

Why Schedule a Discovery Call?

So why would you consider setting up a call?  Because you have a need.  There is something in your career, your leadership experience, your organization or your business that is either not moving in the direction you want it to or you need a little bit more of something to really elevate - such as a skill or some awareness.

What is Being Discovered?

The discovery is really multifaceted. I am going to discover what it is that you have going on, what your goals are, what is working and what isn’t and what success looks like for you. In telling all of that, I will ask questions. You may then discover things that you hadn’t thought of or articulated before. Together, we might discover deeper problems and/or missed celebrations. And we will also discover what is possible.

This discovery can be in relations to situations that are solely for individuals - but also for teams and entire organizations.

Here are some examples of situations that someone might bring to a discovery call:

  • You are ready for promotion, but have never been in a leadership role before and don’t know what you need to know.

  • You have started your own business and are overwhelmed with all there is to do.

  • You are ready to take your business or career to the next level – or even start a business or leave a job, and you’re not quite sure how to make that happen.

  • You’ve been told that you need to learn how to motivate and inspire your team - as results have been lacking and the team dynamics are dysfunctional.

  • As part of your development plan, you need to starting taking more initiative and creating better results.

  • You are nearing retirement and want to make the most out of the last part of their career, but currently feeling dissatisfied.

  • You are looking for your team to connect and collaborate more by using a strength-based approach.

My goal is to help clarify what that need is and give some sense of what I see as possibilities (from my perspective).  Whether or not we work together isn’t the priority. Of course, I’d love that – but I first and foremost want to meet you where you are and help paint a picture of what could be.  I also want to help you get to a place to make a decision.  The decision doesn’t need to be to work with me – but a decision about whether or not you will take some type of action.

The call is also a time of discovery for you – you can get a sense of who I am, my approach, whether or not we would be a good fit and whether or not what I offer makes sense for you, your team, etc.

What Can You Expect During and From the Call?

In general, you don’t need to “bring” anything to the call - other than the ‘thing’ you want to talk about.

Discovery is about getting curious

First, I’ll ask you to tell me about you and what you have going on. I’ll ask you questions and we’ll talk about what you think the solutions is, why this is important for you, and how you would know if you’ve reached ‘success’.

We might talk through an assessment of sorts where I would have your rate your satisfaction in different areas of your life / leadership / business. It might be similar to the Satisfaction Snapshot resource available on my website.

After we’ve spent some time on all of that, I will share what I think the problem is and what I think the possible solution is.  I will paint a picture of what is possible.

If you want to - I will talk about what you will learn in a coaching engagement or leadership workshop experience.

Here is what I know: You will get value from the call itself.  There is no “homework” given from me – but you might just walk away with your own to-do list. At a minimum, you will walk away with some new thoughts to think and the ability to see the possibilities.

What are the Next Steps After the Call?

That depends.

  • If you decide you want to work together, we will confirm the (very exciting) details.

  • If you want to think about it how you want to proceed, we schedule a follow-up call.  We do that within a few days, as we don’t want your brain to get too muddy.

  • If you want to proceed on your own, you take what value you received during the call and use it to create a next step for yourself.

What Might Be Stopping You from Scheduling a Call?

The thought of even booking a call might be uncomfortable or seem like it’s not worth it. Here are some objections that might enter your mind:

THOUGHT: I just want to know exactly how to get from A to Z. I don’t want to take the time for a call.

MY RESPONSE: Real change and real progress takes time. It doesn’t have to take A LOT of time, but for sustainability - you really want to make sure you are getting to the root of what is going on.

THOUGHT: I can handle things on my own.

MY RESPONSE: Yes you can! But why? If you are able to have someone outside of you guide you - why would you not want to do that?

THOUGHT: I need more detail and time to process.

MY RESPONSE: This call is what is going to deliver more detail for you. And you can take time after to process. But remember - getting stuck in needing more detail will not move you forward.

THOUGHT: I don’t want to bother anyone with my problems or I don’t like talking about myself.

MY RESPONSE: I get it. But you deserve to get what you want. You deserve attention and guidance. You likely give it to other all the time. Gift yourself with some focus on you.

THOUGHT: It’s going to be salesy. I don’t want to be sold to.

MY RESPONSE: I hear you! And it’s just not who I am. Do I think that working together would be amazing? Yes! But only if you want to know more about how to take the work deeper and farther.

Final Thoughts

I am here to help people and organizations tap into who they are so they can get out of their own way and create the life, the business, the leadership they want.

I promise that you – and organizations – will see and experience the positive impact this has on your own engagement, self belief, leadership impact, career trajectory, organizational culture and business results.

The discovery call is not something to be weary of. Discovery is where the best things come from.

What do you think?
