In this episode, I am joined by Jim Smith with Disney Facts and Figment. Using Jim’s recent article, “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - The Latest in a Long Line of Disney’s Successful Failures”, as a guide in our conversation about how even the most successful people, like Walt Disney, and most successful companies, like The Walt Disney Company, has a lot of failures. It is how you look at that failure that makes a difference.
We talk about several Disney examples of some pretty big failures that were turned into even bigger successes. We also pull out some of the lessons learned. Here are just a few:
Believe in yourself and your ideas. When belief outweighs the disappointment of a failure - you will continue and see success.
You will never know what is actually possible until you try.
Dream big. And then take action. There may be failures within the big dream…but the true successes will reveal themselves.
If you stop when there is a failure - you are likely depriving the world (and yourself) of what could be.
Be clear about your vision and values - let them guide you in your decisions and what you do with a failure.
There is always something to learn from mistakes. Tweak vs. repeat.
Here is one of my favorite quotes from Jim:
“Walt Disney grew to embrace failure as a necessary ingredient in the recipe for success.”
How can you incorporate this necessary ingredient into your work and life?
Be sure to read the entire article and listen to the episode!
What do you think?
How do you turn your failures in success?
