If you’ve been following me - you know that I talk about leadership being about behaviors and not a title. There ARE “leadership roles” (that is often how they are talked about) that often comes with an elevated level of responsibility and direct reports. You can be in a leadership role and not exhibit leadership behaviors. You can be in a non-leadership role and be a leader based on mindset and behaviors.
Examples of leadership behaviors include:
Focuses on goals
Influences
Encourages
Sees the big picture
Innovates
Inspires trust
Fosters ideas
Empowers
Creates vision
Inspires change
I have been in leadership roles (i.e. as a manager in charge of a function with elevated duties and direct reports) since I was 18 years old. It’s ‘easy’ and comfortable to share that – because it is very much based on my resume. You can look at my resume and see the progression of titles and responsibilities.
But there is something about telling you that I’ve been a LEADER (based on behaviors and how I show up) that actually feels uncomfortable. Do I sound egotistical? Am I bragging? Am I holding myself up against others who I see as amazing leaders? Listen – I know these are all thoughts – and exactly the type of thoughts that can actually hold me back (which is why I love doing thought work and coaching!).
The truth is – I DO see myself as a leader – based on the way I look at what it means to be a leader. An interesting question that I’m asking my self is: did I become a leader because of the JOBS I held or did I get the jobs I held because I was a leader? It doesn’t really matter actually – it’s just an interesting thing to think about.
So, in this post – I want to celebrate being a leader by sharing the top 4 things I really love about being a leader. My hope is that it sparks something in you and it makes you think about yourself as leader – what that means to you – and what YOU love about it! It’s a good reminder when we can spend some time recalling the things that energize us. When we do that - we are encouraged to do MORE of that!
