One thing I talk about a lot is the work I do in coaching. I realize that not everyone may know what coaching is – or may have a certain perception of coaching that isn’t necessarily accurate.  I thought it would be helpful to talk about coaching in the way that I describe it and the work I do.

What is coaching?

Coaching is a “process” that helps you improve performance and/or results by helping you identify what’s going on in your brain, identifying where you’re getting stuck and showing you what might need to change when you can’t see it yourself.

Coaching builds awareness and unlocks your own potential.

In a nutshell – coaching helps you create the exact results (and life) you most desire.

What are the types of “coaching containers”?

The most common ways to engage in coaching are:

  • One-on-one

  • Group programs

  • Membership programs

Why would people look for a coach?

(this example is regrading leadership coaching)

  • When it is the Executive, HR or Corporate Sponsor looking for coaching for their leader - they are typically looking to help the leader: gain confidence, connect with their team better, communicate better, delegate, take initiative, get results, etc.

  • When it is an individual looking for coaching for themselves - they are typically looking for help with: getting a promotion, knowing how to lead people, making a career change, figuring out how to “manage it all”, etc.

Clients might come into coaching with one goal – and leave with results they couldn’t have imagined in other areas of their life.

What does a coach do?

Some coaches are going to teach and advise – but that isn’t the main job of a coach. A coach:

  • can help you see things in your own brain that you otherwise would not see.  These things oftentimes create barriers.

  • can help you look at things differently and equip you with ways of managing your own brain in a way that serves you.

  • will bring to the surface those limiting beliefs that keep you stuck

  • will help you to live into who you are and love it or intentionally change it.

  • will equip you to create a better relationship with yourself – which has a ripple effect on those around you and other areas of your life.

  • will show you blind spots.

  • will give honest feedback.  Coaches work without their beliefs, judgements and opinions getting in the way.

  • will listen for where you are giving away responsibility for your feelings, actions and results to other things and other people.

  • will point out anything they hear that doesn’t serve you for you want to be.

  • will ask questions so you can reveal to yourself how you are really thinking and feeling about a situation.

  • will help you get clear on what action you should take.

  • will help you learn from mistakes.

  • will help you do this without suffering (at least the suffering you think you need to go through).

What will you get from coaching?

Besides the benefits from all of the above, you may also:

  • Learn tools that can be used outside of the coaching session - these tools will teach you how to think differently

  • Be pushed outside of your comfort zone (where the magic happens)

  • Save time

  • Love your job

  • Find your voice

  • Have increased confidence

  • Feel better

  • Experience improved relationships

  • Be a better communicator and connect better with those around you and those you lead

  • Trust yourself more

  • Get to your desired results faster

  • Solve problems quicker

  • Love and leverage who you are

How do you know when you might want a coach?

There are many ways that you might know when a coach might be right for you, including:

  • You want to understand yourself better

  • You want to improve in some area of your leadership or your life (i.e. you want to get to the next level)

  • You are stuck

  • You get that sense that there is something more – but don’t know what it is or how to get it

  • You get an internal sense that there is a change coming your way

  • You get feedback from others that lead to you wanting to make improvements / changes

What should you look for in a coach?

As you think about finding a coach - it’s helpful to remember that not everyone is for everyone.

The coach and client need to be a good fit - but that doesn’t necessarily mean ‘comfort’. You want someone who can challenge you.

A few things that I suggest looking for is:

  • A coach who does this work from a place of love and a place of belief.  The don’t do it for their own ego or for their own gain.

  • A coach who is human too.  Who does this work on themselves. It makes them relatable and humanizes the human experience.

  • A coach who isn’t looking to be your friend (even though it might end up that way).

What do you think?

  • Have you ever worked with a coach?

  • How do you think working with a coach could benefit you and/or your leaders?

  • What questions to you have?
