In this post, I’m taking a moment to reflect on a recent workshop experience where a group of leaders crafted and shared their personal leadership statements. This was a follow-up to Episode 101, where we first talked about the importance of creating a leadership statement—a clear, concise declaration of who you are as a leader.

Let me tell you, it was powerful. There is something about putting words to who you are and how you want to lead that feels both clarifying and vulnerable. And when you speak those words out loud to others? That’s when the magic happens.

In the room were leaders from various roles and backgrounds. The energy was supportive and open. As they shared their statements, themes like authenticity, service, people-first leadership, and growth kept rising to the surface. I saw leaders become more self-aware right in front of me. They were naming things they had felt but never articulated. They were taking ownership of their impact.

Vulnerability and Validation

Some of them got emotional. Some even apologized, unsure if they had done it "right." But here’s the thing: there is no right or wrong. Your leadership statement is yours. It is a reflection of your values, your purpose, and your presence.

My Observations

As an observer, I had goosebumps. These weren’t just words on paper—they were bold, honest representations of people stepping more fully into their leadership. They spoke not just about themselves but in service to their teams and the broader mission.

What Now? Put It to Use

So what now? What do you do once you've crafted your leadership statement?

You use it.

  • Use it as a filter for decision-making.

  • Use it to identify development opportunities and leadership goals.

  • Bring it into performance conversations.

  • Include it in your bio, resume, or LinkedIn profile.

  • Share it with your team, your boss, or a trusted colleague.

  • Make it visible.

  • Revisit it often.

  • Let it ground you when leadership feels hard.

Let it remind you of who you are and who you are becoming.

And remember, your leadership statement will evolve. You’ll grow. Your experiences will shape you. Don’t be afraid to come back to your statement, reflect, revise, and recommit.

Your Invitation

If you haven’t crafted yours yet, now is a great time. If you have one, read it again. Share it. Reflect on how it’s guiding you today.

Because leadership, at its core, is about intention. And when we lead with clarity, we lead with purpose.

What Do You Think?
