Message from PL Travers and Ralph

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

Happy Monday!
Even though it often feels like our world operates in a binary way—“this or that,” “I’m right, you’re wrong,” or “it’s my way or the highway”—we know that being open to diverse perspectives is what truly fuels healthy collaboration, meaningful compassion, and inspired progress.
Our perspectives are shaped by our experiences, upbringing, and even our personality preferences.
One of my favorite movie scenes illustrates the power of perspective. he interaction is between P.L. Travers (author of the Mary Poppins books) and Ralph (the driver hired by Disney to escort her in L.A.). I encourage you to watch the full scene, but here’s a significant part of the exchange:
The overall message of each perspective is similar….but the viewpoint it is coming from is different. One sees hardship (“rain”) as essential, while the other highlights the positivity of growth through light (“sun”).
Neither is wrong.
But hearing both perspectives does a couple of things:
Provides a deeper level understanding of the other person’s mindset, opening the door for curiosity and compassion.
Opens up a new way to view a situation – leading to possibilities previously untapped.
Every perspective serves a purpose. How open are you?
The next time you find yourself digging your heels in on your own perspective, trying cultivating curiosity and opening up to hear a different one.
