Message from Dory

WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

original message date: 06/19/23

Happy Monday!

This week, I’m going to start with a question.  Get yourself grounded, quiet your mind, and maybe even close your eyes (after you read the question, of course!).

To set the stage, imagine you’ve just arrived at your job (whether that is with a company, your own gig, in an external location or at your home…). Picture yourself settling into your workspace.

✨ How are you feeling?  What is the sensation in your body?  Are you excited, calm, energized or motivated?  Or do you feel dread, exhaustion or maybe a little lifeless?

Whatever your feeling is – it has something to tell you.

In Disney Pixar’s film “Finding Nemo” – Dory, because she suffers from short-term memory loss, often feels lost, confused, scared and lonely.  Except when she is with Marlin.  She says this to him:

The feeling of being “home” is going to be different for everyone.  Here’s what it means to me:

It’s being comfortable, relaxed and safe.  It’s gladly showing up as my whole self unapologetically.  It’s knowing I can feel and process all the 50/50 of life – the good, the bad, the uncomfortable.  It’s a place to fail and to grow – both without judgement.  It’s community, belonging and support.  It’s an inner knowing that I’m where I supposed to be doing what I’m called to do.

Layering your own description of “home” onto the work you do and who you do if for/with – is there alignment?  Maybe it’s not 100% - but a majority?

→ If the answer is yes – identify everything that gives you that ‘yes’.  You may need to tap into that if things get misaligned and/or in other areas of your life.

→ If the answer is no – identify what’s missing.  Where is the dissonance?  What needs attention?

I didn’t always feel “home” over my career.  Learning to dig in when that feeling wasn’t present made such a difference.  And although I don't have any regrets - I do wish I would have thought about it this way a lot earlier.

The good news is that now I truly feel “home” in my work more than ever.

I want that for you too.

“Home” is something that you can create for yourself.

And right now is the right time.

This week – notice the feelings you have when you are doing your work. When does it feel like “home” and when does it not? What is that telling you?

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
