Message from Anxiety

WELCOME TO THIS MAGIC MONDAY MOMENT

Kicking off your week with some thoughts around a favorite Disney quote (because in my world - Disney is life!).

original message date: 11/04/24

Happy Monday!

Being a human - with all of our human-y ways – can be a rollercoaster!  I don’t know about you – but with the 2024 presidential election upon us, I’ve noticed and felt a collective heightened level of distraction and anxiety (I realize that’s a big generalization…).  Big events like this can stir up a mix of emotions—concern, anticipation, maybe even a bit of fear about the future.  We’re all feeling it in different ways, and that’s okay.

Anxiety in itself is a complex emotion.  In times like these, it often steps in with the best intentions.

The character, Anxiety, from the recent Disney/Pixar hit movie, Inside Out 2, conveys just that when she says:

However, this well-meaning intention can quickly take over, leaving us feeling overwhelmed.  But what if we took a different approach? What if, instead of letting anxiety call the shots, we worked alongside it, finding a sense of calm and control?

I have learned that this is completely possible.  We can acknowledge its presence, but not let it be the primary voice in our decisions.  We can give anxiety a new role — one where it reminds us to be aware, but doesn’t overshadow our aspirations, courage and progress.

This is pivotal in everyday life – and is especially game-changing if you are in a leadership role, modeling behaviors and guiding others through distracting times.

Here are just a few things that might help to ease the hold that anxiety can have:

✨ Focus on What You Can Control – Reflect on the actions you can take, while letting go of what’s beyond your control.  This can ease the burden.

✨ Breathe and Ground Yourself – When anxiety starts to creep in, pause for a moment.   Try a simple breathing exercise to bring your mind back to the present.

✨ Lean into Support – Talking to friends, family, or trusted peers can remind you that you’re not alone in feeling this way.   Sharing your thoughts and listening to others can offer perspective and relief.

Remember, it’s possible to move through challenging and uncertain situations with a sense of calm, resilience, and confidence.   See anxiety for what it is – a well-intentioned protector.  Thank it and kindly remind it that you’ve got this.

We’re all doing this together!

Check in with your own state of mind this week. Practice strategies that allow you to be in control – and help others do the same where you can!

Wishing you a wonderful week. You've got this!
