Happy New Year! The new year can often come with a new energy, excitement and vision. In this episode - I thought I’d offer a thought (via a quote) that might be helpful!
The quote is from Mary Poppins - The Broadway Musical. It’s actually part of the song “Anything Can Happen”!
In particular – I love the line that says:
“Open different doors. You may find a you that you never knew was yours.”
The quote broken down:
OPEN DIFFERENT DOORS:
On the surface – this is saying to follow curiosity, try something new, take a risk.
For example - it might be starting a side-hustle, leaving a job, using your voice more, challenging a boss, shifting careers, going for a promotion, getting in front of a camera or apply to speak at an event,
YOU MAY FIND A YOU THAT YOU NEVER KNEW WAS YOURS:
When you get curious and open different doors – you will surely learn something about yourself. You will see something in yourself you may not have before. You will have the opportunity to decide if you like how you are showing up. You will have an opportunity to show yourself what you are capable of. You will prove to yourself that you can do “hard” things, that you can fail and not make it mean anything about you as a person AND that you can succeed and create results that you want.
It's the combination of self-awareness, really understanding the power of your thoughts AND taking action that creates change. It’s this that will showcase your abilities and that will guide you in becoming the version of yourself that you didn’t know you could be. The version of you that goes after their goals – that takes chances despite the fear and uncertainty.
Here are a few steps to reflect on in the new year:
Get clear on your ‘goal’.
Write down all of your current thoughts about that goal. What are your beliefs about yourself? What are you excited about? What are you worried about? What are you willing to risk in order to reach it? How committed are you really?
Pull out the one or two thoughts that are energizing, helpful and believable. Make them visible and read them every day.
Pull out the one or two thoughts that could hold you back. Do some thought work on those. Replace with thoughts that are more useful.
Take action. The mindset piece is what will help in being successful in the action. But you need to take the action. Too much mindset work doesn’t create results. Be willing to fail - and fail a lot. Learn from those fails and try again.
