In this episode, we talk about taking responsibility for your thoughts. Past episodes have talked about thought work, including the why’s, the how’s and the sheer power of it. Be sure to check those episodes out - especially episodes 9 and 10!
In this episode - I put a slightly different spin on it and talk about the RESPONSIBILITY you have as a leader.
The reason I’m using such a ‘strong’ word like responsibility is because part of your role as a leader is to look at the big picture and the impact that your own actions, behaviors, decisions and guidance effects the business, your teams, the employee experience, etc.
Being aware of the thought in which you are taking action from is everything.
I talk about two recent situations I was helping some clients with and look at how the thoughts the leader had about the situation drove their actions (and inactions) - leading to results that really were not in the best interest of the leader, the employee(s) and the overall business. Listen to the episode to hear about them!
In the end - the leader needs to be aware of the actual thought they are having and see how it is producing results – and ultimately take responsibility for the thought.
What does that look like?
Get curious and really dig into the thought. Not the surface-level thought. The real, underlying one.
Ask lots of questions like:
What is the upside of doing that?
What am I missing by doing that?
How is this impacting the employee experience?
How is it impacting the business?
Who can I get to help?
Is this the kind of culture I want to create?
Is this how I want to show up as a leader?
What am I really afraid of?
Having these inward reactions are natural. So there is no judgment on that.
Notice how it (the outcome) becomes about you – not about others or the business.
Having reactionary thoughts is completely normal. It’s what our brains do. But your thoughts are your responsibility (all humans). In a leadership role – you really should be aware of how they drive your response, actions, etc. You are responsible for more than yourself. You are responsible for creating an engaged culture, a place of value and results that drive the business forward.
What do you think?
Do you believe that your thoughts create your results?
Are you willing to pause and take notice of your thoughts - deciding if they serve you and those around you?
