As we step into a brand-new year, there's a certain energy that comes with fresh starts and new goals. For many, the turning of the calendar is a chance to reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. But there’s one simple yet powerful tool I use each year that helps me stay focused and aligned with my goals: choosing a Word of the Year.
In this post, I’m sharing why I believe in this practice, how it’s shaped my life and leadership, and how you can use it to create intentional growth in 2025—or any time of year.
What Is a Word of the Year?
A Word of the Year is a guiding focus for the months ahead—a simple word or phrase that anchors your decisions, mindset, and actions. It serves as a lens through which you view your goals and experiences, bringing clarity and intention to everything you do.
Some people may choose a word or phrase at the start of the calendar year, but this exercise can be done at any time—for a quarter, a project, or even a specific season of life. The key is to select a word that resonates deeply and aligns with your values and aspirations.
For me, the concept isn’t new. I first started intentionally choosing a Word of the Year back in 2012 after participating in a workshop led by Ali Edwards, who offers prompts and exercises to keep the word alive throughout the year. Since then, it’s become a consistent practice that shapes my personal and professional life.
Why Choose a Word of the Year?
Choosing a word helps me focus on what truly matters, especially when motivation wanes or life gets busy. It acts as a motivator and a guide, keeping me grounded and aligned with the goals I set for myself.
When you give your brain one word to focus on, it shapes your decisions and actions. It becomes a filter through which you view challenges, opportunities, and even setbacks. Instead of letting distractions pull you off course, your word becomes a reminder of who you want to be and what you want to achieve.
The power of this practice lies in its simplicity and versatility. You can choose a word for your personal life, career, leadership, or even for specific projects. For example, when leading my HR team, we would choose a collective word to guide our behaviors and interactions throughout the year. It gave us a shared focus and helped us show up with intention.
How to Choose Your Word
The process of selecting a Word of the Year can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. There are no rules—it’s about what resonates with you. Here’s how I approach it:
Reflect on the past year – What worked? What didn’t? What do you want to carry forward, and what do you want to leave behind?
Think about your future self – Ask questions like: What do I want to accomplish this year? How do I want to feel? What challenges do I anticipate?
Look for themes – As you answer these questions, you may start noticing recurring themes or ideas. Pay attention to the words that pop up.
Listen to nudges – Sometimes, your word will reveal itself when you least expect it—through a conversation, a quote, or a song.
Use tools to brainstorm – If you’re stuck, try using a thesaurus, doing a quick Google search, or even asking AI tools for ideas based on your reflections.
My 2025 Word of the Year: Ignite
For 2025, my word is Ignite. This word speaks to action, energy, and intention. It reminds me to take fast, intentional steps to create meaningful impact. It also symbolizes both starting something new and letting go of what no longer serves me.
Ignite is about creating sparks—whether that's through new ideas, deeper connections, or personal growth. It’s also a reminder to be mindful of what could unintentionally catch fire and cause harm, prompting me to stay aware and proactive.
Choosing Ignite came from a conversation with a friend who shared a metaphor about fireworks: sometimes we keep our potential boxed up, but all it takes is one spark to create an incredible explosion of possibility. That conversation stuck with me and became the inspiration for my word.
How to Keep Your Word Alive
Choosing a word is just the first step. The real magic happens when you keep it alive throughout the year. Here are some ways I do that:
Document your word – Write it down, along with why you chose it and how you hope it will impact your year.
Create a vision board – Whether digital or physical, a vision board helps you visualize how your word will come to life.
Use prompts – I love using monthly prompts to reflect on my word. These questions help me stay connected to my intentions.
Make it visible – Keep your word in a place where you see it daily—a sticky note on your computer, a screensaver, or even a piece of jewelry.
Pick an anthem – Choose a song that embodies your word. My anthem for Ignite is “Defying Gravity” from Wicked.
Why You Should Try It
If you’ve never chosen a Word of the Year before, I encourage you to give it a try. It’s a simple yet powerful way to set yourself apart, stay motivated, and create intentional growth. Whether you’re a leader looking to enhance your impact or someone seeking personal clarity, a Word of the Year can help you stay grounded and focused.
Remember, there are no rules. Your word doesn’t have to impress anyone but you. It’s about what feels right and resonates with your unique journey.
