Today’s episode is a short one. There is just one simple message I want to share with you this week.
In the Disney movie, there is a song at the end called “All of You”. It helps me to articulate something that I hold true with the people / leaders I work with.
When I started my own business – I had the hardest time narrowing down my ‘ideal customer’.
I just wanted to help all the people. And that is still the case. You know why? Because everyone has a story. Everyone wears several different hats. But I eventually landed on serving leaders and teams within organizations (although I do life coaching too). It is where much of my experience and expertise is.
However – what I want to share is this:
I know that being a leader is only ONE of your identities - only one of the hats you wear.
I strongly believe that we should bring all of who we are to the things we do and the jobs we have.
Yes, there may be a subset of behaviors, expectations and duties that come along with each identity. Your role as a parent will have different nuances to it than your role as a partner. Your role as a friend will require different things than your role as a leader.
But as humans, we can’t just shed or turn off one identity whenever we want to. We are a whole person. I see you. All of You (like the song from Encanto).
You may have you heard the expression: “check your problems at the door.” This means that you shouldn’t bring your personal lives / problems into work. I disagree with that. Now – yes – there are boundaries around that. But what I mean is that you can’t just turn off or pretend that things aren’t happening - both the good and the bad.
Of course, there are boundaries. If it’s distracting from work, there are performance concerns, policy violations, etc. - that needs to be dealt with. But what I’m saying is that simply acknowledging the humanness in us will go a long way. That’s often what people need - to feel like they belong, like they matter, like they are valued.
When we don’t show up as ourselves – it can feel inauthentic.
Now – as you listen to what I’m saying through the lens of your leadership role – consider all of this to be true for your employees. Consider how you can make sure that you see all of them. Again – I’m not suggesting you become BFFs or allow for unlimited free-to-be-you time. But when you even approach conversations and decisions from the lens of the whole person - from a place of curiosity and compassion – that shifts the way you show up and the way you are able to connect - which enhances their experience in the workplace. They will likely feel connected, valued. Like they belong and are seen. I promise you – that is only a win-win for the employee, for you as the leader and for the organization.
In this podcast - the conversations might be directed to some type of leadership aspect – but I promise, most everything can and should be applied to the whole person. Transformations made in ones leadership definitely has a ripple effect to other areas of life. I love it. I think it’s magical. And I honor it.
What do you think?
Do you bring your whole self to all you do?
Do you honor the whole person of your employees?
